Sophie - Cheerleader and Junior
Hey, I am Sophie, 16 years old and an exchange student from Germany. For 10 months, I have been living in Layton, Utah, and going to Layton Christian Academy. Coming here was probably the best decision I could have made for my junior year in High School.
LCA offered me huge opportunities to grow over my own boundaries and gain skills for life. Also, LCA gave me an amazing option to interact with people from all over the world. I have to say that I definitely made friends for life here. LCA`s focus is on Sports and Studies, which offers all the kids amazing chances to get involved and improve their skills or start a new sport. Cheerleading is a sport I have never done before, but it gave me a huge chance to meet amazing girls and be part of a loving team and family. Now that the basketball and cheer season ended, I need to say that I didn’t think I would miss it and the girls that much. It totally added adventures, experiences, and moments that are unforgettable. There are not a lot of people who can say I cheered for our school’s basketball team at the state finals, they won too ;). With all the sports teams and events, the school spirit grew a lot too and made you also feel and know that you are part of a big family. I think what I want to say is that the sports teams at LCA give all the students huge opportunities to make their exchange year as great as possible.
However, the athletic part of LCA is huge, but not everything this school offers. Their studies are really interesting and varied. Personally, I had a lot of classes I wouldn’t get to do in Germany, like health, graphic design, government, or marketing. I don’t know if it is just me, but I really enjoy learning new things. Another part of LCA that impressed me was the faculty. Almost all of the teachers here care a lot about their students, talking about grades as well as their personal life. Which is why the relationships between students and teachers are respectful and trustworthy.
My favorite things I have done this year at the school are probably being at almost all the sports events and supporting the teams. Also, the school dances were a highlight because that is where you get to know the people and their culture. Another thing I really liked was the M-term Week, where we got to participate in different workshops and experience new things as well as the T212 days. T212 was amazing for the students to improve their relationships with each other as well as with God. During these days you get to know about yourself as well as about the people around you, you thought you already knew pretty well.
What added to my experience in the United States was definitely my host family. My host family includes my two very loving host parents, as well as my Spanish host sister. The four of us explored a lot and we had great experiences together. Because of them, I got to see a lot of places and capture amazing moments.
My intention with sharing my experience is to have students realize there is an opportunity they would miss out on. What I mean is that Layton Christian Academy offers chances, opportunities, experiences, and adventures that can influence your life enormously in a very positive way. I love being part of this huge family made out of individuals that all want to achieve the same and have a good time. It is great to see how we all changed positively over this school year and improved ourselves, our mindset, our skills, and a lot more. I just want to say that coming here is a huge chance for your life and future that would be sad to miss out on.
