Mrs. Anna Long Appointed as K–8 Principal
We are delighted to welcome back Anna Long to LCA as our new K–8 Principal! Anna first joined LCA 15 years ago after a distinguished career in Christian education leadership roles at Bradshaw Christian School and Capital Christian School in Sacramento, California. When she first joined LCA, she taught Jr. Kindergarten before moving into middle school, where she taught 6th–8th grade English, Honors English, Bible, Ministry Class, and Choir. Her additional background includes serving as a curriculum writer for Purposeful Design (ACSI) and launching new academic programs as a Founding Director at Monticello Academy, a prestigious Utah Charter School. Her private and charter school experience will be a great benefit to LCA students.

Anna is passionate about faith-centered education, academic excellence, and building a safe, inclusive environment where every student feels valued. She brings deep expertise in literacy leadership, teacher development, and school culture building. Anna shares, "Coming back to LCA feels like coming home. I’m honored to step into this role and be part of the amazing work God is doing here."

Her goals for the K–8 program include ensuring Christ remains at the center of everything we do, fostering academic excellence, supporting teachers with practical and Christ-centered professional development, and cultivating a strong sense of belonging for our beautifully diverse student body.

Anna's leadership is rooted in Romans 12:12: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

Gabe Pethtel Transitions to High School Principal
After serving as our K–8 Principal during the fall semester, Mr. Gabe Pethtel will now transition into the role of High School Principal for the 2025–2026 school year. Gabe brings a heart for Christian education, a strong background in athletic leadership, and a deep passion for building an outstanding high school culture.

Reflecting on his time with the K–8 students and teachers, Gabe shares, "I have been blessed to see the amazing students, teachers, and families at LCA, who welcomed me with open hearts. That spirit of faith, flexibility, and community is what makes LCA so special."

Gabe is especially excited to focus on helping high school students prepare for life beyond LCA—whether in college, career, or ministry. He has worked closely with Head of School Pastor Chris Crowder to create a new Guidance Counselor role to better support college and career pathways, led by Mrs. Kelsey Mills.

"At LCA, we are not just educating minds; we are nurturing hearts for Christ," Gabe said. "I can’t wait to help our students grow academically, spiritually, and socially in a community they’ll remember for the rest of their lives."

Gabe's extensive career in Christian school leadership and athletics is complemented by Dana's profound expertise in science education. Together, they aim to foster environments where students can thrive both in sports and academics. Their family, including Logan and Caleb, both serving in the military, Emma, a student at Utah State University, and Hudson, who will join LCA as a 4th grader, are excited to be part of our community.

Gabe Pethtel: Charting a New Course for LCA Athletics
We are excited to announce Gabe Pethtel as the new Athletic Director at Layton Christian Academy. With a wealth of experience spanning over 27 years in both public and private educational settings, Gabe brings a robust background in Christian school leadership to our community. Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, he has consistently demonstrated his ability to enhance athletic programs and school culture.

Most recently, as the Head of School at Intermountain Christian School, Gabe successfully managed a substantial school-wide vision plan and fundraising campaign, and played a pivotal role in transitioning their athletics from UHSAA 1A to 2A classification. His leadership saw the school achieve unprecedented success in regional championships and state tournaments, setting a high standard for athletic achievement.

At LCA, Gabe is committed to fostering a holistic approach to student athletics. His philosophy emphasizes developing the whole student-athlete, nurturing their growth across elementary, middle, and high school levels. Under his guidance, LCA's athletics will focus on not just competing but cultivating character, discipline, and integrity—qualities that prepare our students for success beyond sports.

Gabe believes that athletics serve as a crucial platform for promoting values such as faith, family, service, and accountability. These principles resonate deeply with our mission at LCA making him a perfect fit for our community:

At 19, embarking on a college journey in Dallas far from home, Andrew Ponson encountered both the exhilarating independence and the stark loneliness that comes with being an international student. The novelty of new friendships and newfound freedom was often overshadowed by the profound sense of isolation, especially during holidays when peers returned to their families, leaving behind a poignant reminder of his lack of a 'home' away from home.

The Turning Point: A Warm Wednesday Tradition
"It wasn't until my second year that I found a remedy to my homesickness," recalls Andrew, reflecting on his transformative college years. "I met a family who opened their home to me every Wednesday night to catch up on our favorite TV series. This simple tradition became my weekly highlight, a sanctuary from the solitude of dorm life."

This experience was not just about watching TV; it was about the warmth of inclusion, the joy of being part of a family. "Those evenings gave me something invaluable—a sense of belonging. It turned a routine gathering into a lifeline," he explains.

Now, years later, Andrew finds himself on the other side of the equation, providing a nurturing environment for international students facing similar challenges. "These young students are far from home, overwhelmed by academic pressures, extracurricular expectations, and the daunting task of fitting into a new culture," he notes.

Offering a quiet space where students can simply be themselves is transformative. "We aim to create a home where students are celebrated, not just tolerated; where they can be imperfect, share their struggles openly, and feel genuinely supported," Andrew emphasizes.

In The Ponson home, every student, regardless of their background or school role, finds a place at the family table. "Our home becomes a haven where the class president, the class clown, the dancer, the hopeless romantic, the tomboy, and even the mean girl all have a seat. It's a place where they are reminded that they matter, that they are not alone."

Ms. Heather Sligar's story at LCA is one of full-circle inspiration and unwavering commitment. As an LCA alumnus, her journey began 23 years ago when she was enrolled as a 5th grader. Her experience as a student, particularly the encouraging words from an English teacher during her high school years, planted the seeds for her future career. "If you want to see change in this school, come back with your teaching degree and be the change," he had said. These words resonated, setting her on a path to Weber State University to pursue Elementary Education.

A Heart for Missions and Teaching
Between college semesters, Ms. Sligar embarked on missions trips across the globe, working with children and youth, an experience that solidified her decision to become a Christian school teacher. Upon graduation, she immediately joined LCA as the 3rd-grade teacher. Now, as she steps into her 11th year at LCA, this time as the 5th-grade teacher, she reflects on her journey, attributing her dedication to her faith and the sense of purpose she finds at LCA.

Inspiration and Philosophy in the Classroom
Ms. Sligar draws inspiration from her colleagues, whom she regards as deep-spirited friends. Their encouragement and affirmation of her work's purpose fuel her passion for teaching. Her teaching philosophy centers around forming bonds with her students and encouraging them to face challenges with effort and resilience. The joy of witnessing a student's "I get it now!" moment is unparalleled for her.

A Verse Close to the Heart
Her favorite Bible verse, Matthew 6:26, is a source of comfort and a reminder of her worth and God's care:

“Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

It’s a reflection of the values she imparts to her students - the assurance of their value and the constant presence of support and guidance.

Life Beyond the Classroom
Outside the classroom, Ms. Sligar's passions include travel, reading, and spending quality time with family and friends. She enjoys cultural experiences like concerts, plays, and movies, which add joy and enrichment to her life. Her favorite movie, "My Girl," and book, "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane," reflect her love for heartwarming and transformative stories.

Interestingly, if given a chance to choose a superpower, she would opt for the ability to shrink and grow like Antman, intrigued by the perspectives this power could offer.
